Flexible sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic test ordered by your physician and administered by a Gastroenterologist with the aim to visualize your lower bowel.

This procedure used to examine the rectum, anal canal and distal half of the colon. Enlarged hemorrhoids and diseases of this part of the colon can be diagnosed and biopsied if applicable.

Sigmoidoscopy procedure is virtually painless. This means that sedation is not required and a driver is not necessary.

As part of this procedure a flexible camera is used to help extract small tissue samples.  During the test air is inserted into your bowel witch will pass shortly after the procedure.  Enemas taken prior to the procedure help ensure that your rectum is free of stool, letting the doctor see as much as possible at the examination

A sigmoidoscopy is a potentially lifesaving procedure, but as with any invasive procedure, there are potential risks. Bleeding and bowel perforation requiring treatment rarely occurs.

After your procedure, if you are experiencing significant pain or bleeding at home, and it is after clinic hours, please go to the nearest hospital emergency.
