Constipation

Constipation can occur even in healthy persons from time to time. It will generally pass with simple measures such as increased fluid and fibre intake, however if constipation remains persistent or severe, then assessment by a gastroenterologist may be needed.

What causes constipation?

Constipation most commonly occurs when waste or stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract or cannot be eliminated effectively, which may cause the stool to become hard and difficult to pass. Chronic constipation has many possible causes:

  • Low-fibre diet
  • Insufficient fluid intake
  • Lack of regular exercise
  • Certain medications
  • Advancing age
  • Slow intestinal transit
  • Obstructive lesions in the bowel

Signs and symptoms of severe constipation

More severe constipation can result in one or more of the following:

  • Straining to pass bowel movements
  • Feeling as though there’s a blockage in your rectum that prevents bowel movements
  • Feeling as though you can’t completely empty the stool from your rectum
  • Needing help to empty your rectum, such as using your hands to press on your abdomen and using a finger to remove stool from your rectum

If any of these are occurring, then specialist medical assessment is advised.

Diagnosis and treatment

The team at Glengarry Gastroenterology can provide a comprehensive assessment, including a review of your medical history and medications, and the identification of lifestyle factors that may be contributing. We will then determine what investigations are needed, and can help formulate a management plan for your symptoms.
