Rectal Bleeding

Rectal bleeding, whilst frightening, is a very common problem.

Although most often benign, rectal bleeding can sometimes be of dangerous origin, and thus medical consultation should always be sought.

What causes rectal bleeding?

Bright red rectal bleeding frequently originates from haemorrhoids – swollen veins that can occur within the rectum and may extend outside the anus. Bleeding is usually provoked by excessive straining whilst passing a bowel movement. Bleeding from haemorrhoids is usually painless. Painful bleeding, however, may be from an anal fissure – a tiny tear in the anus usually caused by straining whilst passing a hard stool.

Whilst these causes are most common, other more sinister causes of rectal bleeding can
include:

  • Colon cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Gastrointestinal ulcers
  • Diverticular bleeding

Diagnosis and treatment

Most cases of rectal bleeding will ultimately require assessment with colonoscopy. This is the most direct way to evaluate the cause, and determine if dangerous pathology is present.
