DIAGNOSING & TREATING
DIARRHEA
IN A COMFORTABLE AND ACCESSIBLE ENVIRONMENT
Diarrhea
Diarrhoea is a common problem that thankfully in most cases is a short-term and self-limiting condition. Occasionally, more persistent symptoms can develop.
Acute diarrhoea is most often caused by an infection. This might require antibiotic treatment depending on the type of infection. If symptoms are chronic (persisting for more than two weeks), then other investigations and treatments may be needed.
What causes chronic diarrhoea?
There are many potential causes of chronic diarrhoea, including conditions such as:
- Coeliac disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Crohn’s disease
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Pancreatic insufficiency
- Endocrine disorders (such as thyroid or adrenal insufficiency)
- Medication reactions
- Dietary intolerance
Diagnosis and treatment
Determining a cause of chronic diarrhoea requires specialist medical assessment, taking into account your full medical history and medications, and performing investigations that often include blood tests, stool specimens, and endoscopic assessment.
