Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is an allergy to gluten – a protein found in wheat, barley, rye.

As a result of this allergy, the body reacts to any gluten consumed, causing inflammation in the gut that is usually most severe in the small intestine – the part of the digestive system responsible for absorbing nutrients.

What exactly is Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, where the immune system produces antibodies against gluten, mistaking it as a threat to the body. The antibodies that are produced cause the surface of your intestine to become inflamed and damaged.

Symptoms of Coeliac disease?

The most common symptoms of coeliac disease in adults include:

  • Iron deficiency
  • Bloating/gas
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fatigue, weakness and lethargy
  • Weight loss

Diagnosis and treatment

Coeliac disease is usually diagnosed with a combination of blood testing and biopsies from the small intestine on a gastroscopy.

Once diagnosed, the only way to treat celiac disease is to permanently remove gluten from your diet. This allows the intestine to heal and begin absorbing nutrients.
